MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS
Life-Sized Device Cutouts
The channel marketing team at Motorola Solutions is responsible for empowering and resourcing channel sales partners to promote Motorola Solutions technologies.
Channel marketing proposed the idea of creating printed, life-sized cutout versions of several featured radio and mobile video devices, to leave potential customers with key features and calls-to-action as well as an impression of how compact and well-built each device was.
I was assigned to design the full set of device printouts, create a repeatable design system and apply print production requirements to enable internal and external teams to complete high-quality print orders on demand.
Accurate
Although I was very familiar with the set of radio and mobile video devices being featured in this set, it was important for me to do additional research to make sure I met the “life-size” part of this design brief.
Pulling information from device data sheets and using precise measurements in InDesign, I made sure I was placing device photography at the same size as their real counterparts. This also allowed me to provide guidance to my channel marketing stakeholders about how much content can realistically fit onto a 5.2” x 2.2” radio.
After handling the device photography, I also developed a consistent design system to layout the rest of the content (headline, paragraph, call-to-action) on the reverse side of the cutout.

More details on design considerations
Functional
In order to provide these assets as resources to both internal sales teams and channel partner companies, we needed to create two versions of each device – one with a QR code directing people to its dedicated webpage and one additionally intended to be co-branded with the channel partner company’s logo.
I used my knowledge and experience with document co-branding and QR code testing to optimize the code size for most reliable scanning and to create a co-brandable area that would be as brand-friendly as possible for any partner company logo.
These elements needed to be carefully balanced considering the unique shape of each device and the Motorola Solutions brand identifier and elements included in the layout.

Print-ready
I have extensive education and experience creating dielines – essentially custom-created “cookie cutters” used by print vendors to trim complex assets like presentation folders (and life-sized radios) into custom shapes.
Using the pen tool to carefully trace the trim shape of each device, I created a 1pt dieline stroke in a spot color so that it could be easily identified and used by print vendor software.
I then custom-adjusted the bleed area of each radio to ensure that any minor misplacement of the dieline (no more than a millimeter or two) would not result in any problematic mismatching between the device and the bleed area.
