Building smart templates

  • Marketing collateral

In partnership with a third-party design agency, I was responsible for creating a new system of collateral templates that reflect Motorola Solutions' new brand narrative and redesigned look in 2023.

Working with the team's creative director and design leads, I pulled together the agency ideas that best supported the company’s design needs and created targeted InDesign templates for data sheets, brochures, case studies and multi-page documents.

The final set included fully built-out layers, paragraph styles, brand overlays and measurements, so that each of the design teams were able to quickly leverage the designs for their documents.

  • Webpage graphics

The 2023 Motorola Solutions redesign also included stylized hero banner designs that required a new set of brand overlays to be adapted into several viewport sizes.

Working with the web design team, I created multi-artboard Illustrator files with layers and artboards labelled and arranged for easy updates and file export.

Designers could easily change overlay colors and background photography as needed, then export into web-ready graphics at the correct specs with confidence.

  • Google Docs and Slides styling

Although the Motorola Solutions Google Doc template design was beautifully handled by other designers, I have a lot of experience with making sure non-designers have easy-to-use Google Suite resources to make professional presentations and documents.

Programming font styles, custom color palettes and line spacing go a long way towards empowering brand consistency.

So, what?

  • Great templates require smart design skills and experience with how your intended users can easily interact with and customize content.

  • What is the "point" of your templated asset? Is it destined to be a PDF? On a webpage? An ad? Knowing what each platform requires is key.

  • I know how to let the content and purpose of a set of documents or graphics drive their template design and format.
